March

jack pine and river birch, Sauk Co.

It’s March 8 and there’s still a foot of snow on the ground.  Cabin fever is real, and its setting in. The only cure, of course, is spring, but getting outside provides relief. Fortunately, I am working on forestry surveys with a friend.  We head out to survey a pine plantation near Lone Rock in the Wisconsin River valley. Learning how to use laser tools for measuring height and distance, and the old standby clinometer and metal tape, it’s good practice and a throwback to when I did study plots in the state forests.  Just us three in the snow (including my friend’s dog), and the bright sun.
