Frank Allis School prairie burn

Frank Allis school, on Buckeye Road on Madison’s east side, is immersed in history.  The building is almost 100 years old, founded by the scion of Milwaukee’s industrial giant, Allis Chalmers.  The schoolyard has an oak older than the United States.  And it has a prairie where students can experience Wisconsin’s ancient natural heritage.  This Saturday, a bunch of volunteers gathered at Frank Allis to burn the school prairie, which was established over 20 years ago.  The prairie’s tall grasses and wildflowers provide a home for woodchucks and foxes, and give inspiration to students for creative writing and the study of nature.   photos of the burn:  http://frankallisgarden.weebly.com/
